Why Is Dark Nuns So Special to Song Hye Kyo?

Song Hye Kyo makes her highly anticipated return to the big screen with Dark Nuns, a project she has long awaited. This film quickly became one of the most special endeavors in her career. Why?

During an interview on the YouTube channel Fairy Jaehyung, Song Hye Kyo shared insights about her acting journey, moving from one project to another. She admitted that she often received similar roles, which left her worried that audiences might grow tired of her performances. At 43, she even found herself feeling stagnant, losing excitement for acting due to repeatedly being cast in identical roles. This led her to take on The Glory, a project that allowed her to step out of her comfort zone.

Now, Dark Nuns marks the second time she has ventured into unfamiliar territory. In this film, she explores a darker side of acting, stepping away from the typical lead roles found in romantic or melodramatic dramas.

Song Hye Kyo expressed that her previous success in romantic comedies and melodramas had resulted in her being typecast. Although the variety of female lead characters in dramas has expanded recently, she knew she needed a change to keep both herself and her audience engaged.

When The Glory script landed in her hands, she was thrilled. Not long after, Dark Nuns followed, and she accepted the role without hesitation.

Both The Glory and Dark Nuns have reshaped her approach to acting, pushing her to grow and evolve. It’s no wonder these two projects hold a special place in her heart. “Dark Nuns is only my second project in a different genre. There will be more to come,” she said confidently.

The movie premiered in Indonesian theaters on January 24, 2025, as a sequel to The Priests (2015). It also marks Song Hye Kyo’s first film release of the year.

During the production of this occult-themed movie, Song Hye Kyo received praise for her commitment and performance. Playing Sister Junia, her character embarks on a mission to save a child tormented by an evil spirit.

“Every word, expression, and gaze from Song Hye Kyo as Sister Junia adds to the film’s visual charm,” praised director Kwon Hyuk Jae, who also admired her dedication to the role.

For three months, Song Hye Kyo fully immersed herself in the character. “I lived as her for three months, focusing only on how to bring the character to life,” she shared in an interview with Xports News.
